Question 1
The igneous rock gabbro is made up primarily of iron-rich silicate minerals. Predict what gabbro will
look like based on its iron-rich silicate content
Answer:
Gabbro is expected to have a dark appearance. This is because of the high content of iron.
Question 2

Muscovite mica [KAl

They both form sheet silicate structures with mineral sheets that flake off. Based on their chemical
formula predict how they are different in appearance and explain it:
Answer:
Biotite is more mafic, i.e. Dark in color than the Muscovite. Based on the chemical formula, Biotite
mica has a high MgO and FeO content which gives it a darker appearance while Muscovite mica is
rich in Aluminum which gives it a clear color appearance. This gives a distinct physical property to
differentiate between the two minerals.
Question 3
What are minerals made up of?
Answer: Atoms
Atoms combine together to form a mineral.

Answer- Rocks
This is because minerals are the units that make up a rock. A rock consists of aggregates of minerals.
Question 5
Which is the largest?
Answer: Rock
A rock is made up of minerals which are made from the combination of atoms.
Question 6
Which is the smallest?
Answer: Atoms
Atoms combine to form a mineral and minerals combine to form a rock.
Question 7
Minerals have a definite crystal structure meaning that the atoms are arranged in a particular
geometric pattern. Examine this picture of granite. Does this also apply to rocks?
Answer: Yes
Question 8
Two students are discussing a diamond, which is made up of carbon atoms in a compact pattern.
Student 1: I think it is a rock because it is really hard and solid. it comes from mines in the ground.
Student 2: I think it is a mineral because it’s the same throughout, and it is made from pattern of
atoms.
With which student do you agree?
Answer:
Student 2: Diamond is a mineral because it has a definite atomic structure throughout the mineral.
Question 9
In your own words how would you describe the difference between a rock and a mineral?
