Connections
Through examining the connection existing before and after the text, it is evident that the
message was directed to the Israelites who God had delivered from slavery or in Egypt and they
were about to be given some towns. The text clearly showcases the supremacy of God above all
other things as the only person who deserves honor and obedience. The great purpose of the text
lies behind God’s supremacy and the consequences of enticing against the Worship of God.
Verse 1-3 shows how the false prophets use their power to entice people in worshipping other
gods through promising portents/omens. The text cautions people against heeding to the
prophet’s words since it is a test by God on their Love for Him. Verse 4 is very clear on the fact
that He is the only God, who should be followed, obeyed, feared, held fast, and served. The
message before the main content sets a foundation to the main text on the identity of God, why
He should be obeyed and the consequences of those who entices against the Worship of God. It
sets a foundation on explaining that the enticement might also come from the people around to
compose of family and friends, which sensitizes on the seriousness of the worship of other gods
since it leads to death. The text after the main text talks about how some have been set astray by
some scoundrels amongst the people. They are asked to investigate whether the accusations are
true and set them on fire. This clearly establishes the supremacy of God as one is compassionate
to those who obey Him.
The whole chapter portrays God as a jealous being who cannot stand his people being
enticed to worship of other gods. The enticers could compose of prophets, family, friends and

even towns who are subject to destruction through death. The text cautions against enticement
while encouraging the people to obey His commandment for He is a compassionate God.
The Text as an Answer to an Important Question:
Who should be followed and worshiped by the Israelites? The text explicitly and clearly
shows that God is the only person to be followed. It described the lack of power of the other gods
despite their ability to promise omens. It clearly shows that those who entice his people against
following him will be punished by death; hence, people should be careful against such people.
The prophets, family, and friends who are likely to entice people against following the only God
have clearly discussed in the text as well as the consequences of the same. One of the key
consequences of not following the Lord in the text is said to be dead which the believers are
instructed to kill them without pity or mercy after a thorough investigation. Leading other people
in worshiping and following other gods is described as turning the destructive stick to oneself
which will lead to death. The text also describes how the Israelites will be turned to worshipping
the Lord which can be through obeying his commandments as well as doing what is right in the
sight of God.
It is God who deserves to be followed and worshiped by everyone and no one should be
enticing people against the same. According to the text, ‘‘The LORD your God you shall follow,
him alone you shall fear, his commandments you shall keep, his voice you shall obey, him you
shall serve, and to him, you shall hold fast’’ (Vs. 4). The people should follow and Worship God
completely which will attract compassion from the Lord.

EXEGETICAL PAPER PART II
The song ‘‘No other God’’, by Preye Odede clearly characterizes the passage through
showing the supremacy of God as the biblical text focus on. The text recognizes the presence of
kings, a lot of riches but they are incomparable to the true God. The songs narrate that God is the
creator of all, despite the daily pains and difficulties; He still remains to be God. The second last
line of the lyrics clearly states that from East to West, He remains to be God and there is no God
who is comparable to him. The last line of the lyrics states that, even the demons and everybody
bows for Him. This narrates vs. 3 of the text which states that the Lord your God is testing you to
see whether you love Him. The text shows that God can use false prophets to test your faith in
him. Hence, the false prophet can bow to God and be used in testing the faith of the righteous
since there is no other God how to deserve to be worshiped and followed.
The song clearly narrates the supremacy of this God as a God who can command
everything to bow down to included diseases and demons in the sound of His name. This is clear
that turning to other voices is against the Lord since there is no other authority which needs to be
respected. Therefore, the song clearly illustrates the message on the supremacy of God as an
authority which commands honor and obedience.
