Identify and describe the culture(s) that matches your current or recent employer
Leaders exhibit different cultures which are based on different aspects. My current
employer is United Health Care (UHC). Notably, the employer has high performance and high
cultural values quadrant. Leaders with this culture achieve their goals and promote values in the
organization (Daft, 2018). United Health Care has been successful because its leaders emphasize
culture and high performance. The organization changed its cultural values last year to
emphasize its brand and improve efficiency. Currently, the firm's core values are integrity,
performance, innovation, relationships, and compassion. UHC has started to train “cultural
ambassadors” as cheerleaders to promote values in the organization. The top leaders in the
organization embody these key values to help spread the “united culture” in the company.

Well, I am also a cultural ambassador after attending training sessions which were
organized by the management. The company organizes a ceremony, the Culture Forum, which
brings all culture ambassadors together to share stories and give the impact of united culture on
the employees. The stories are used in the firm’s business meetings and publicly in its
advertisements. According to Daft (2018), leaders use stories to illustrate the organization’s
primary values, and this is an example of that. The story called “the power of one” resonates
with me. This story focuses on how a single act can have a huge impact on another person’s life

and wellbeing. The story emphasized our compassion value. UHC also uses symbols to display
our cultural values. For example, emails sent by the organization have watermarks with the
mission statement at the bottom. The watermark is written “Helping people live healthy” and the
list of the five cultural values. This symbolizes our emphasis on the importance of cultural values
and reminds employees, business partners, and clients that we are committed to improving our
corporate culture.
Cultural values are important in the firm because they provide a specific course of action.
They also focus on personal values such as integrity and compassion and business values such as
performance, integrity, and innovation (Daft, 2018). UHC is financially successful because of
combining culture with performance. Most people identify UHC as a top organization to work
with.
After reading the textbook, I realized that UHC has a value-based culture. The
organization has an achievement culture that focuses on a clear vision of its goals, such as sales
growth, profitability, and market share. UHC focuses on winning and achieving these goals. The
company has to find ways to differentiate itself from the rest of the organizations because
healthcare is very competitive. The firm is trying to meet a 70 member net promoter score within
five years, which has caused different business segments to become very competitive with one
another in the industry.
