Why did the assassination of Franz Ferdinand present Austria with a survival threat?
Introduction
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by the Black Hand, a Serbian terrorist
group, on June 28, 1914, led to the onset of world war 1. Franz Ferdinand was an Austrian
who surrendered his children's rights to the throne to marry a lady-in-waiting, Sophie. While
he was in power, he tried to revive the relations between Austria and Russia while sustaining
an alliance with Germany. After the assassination by the Serb nationalists, Austria declared
war on Serbia one month after the assassination leading to the beginning of world war 1.
Franz Ferdinand was a member of the house of Hapsburg, the rulers of the Holy Roman
Empire, the Austro-Hungarian empire, and the Spanish empire. He began his military career
at the age of twelve and was fast promoted through the ranks to a major general at the age of
31. He was supposed to take the throne after the suicide of the emperor's son, crown prince
Rudolf in 1889 and his father's death in 1896 from typhoid fever. His marriage to Countess
Sophia Chotek suffered a backlash since marriage to a Hapsburg needed one to be a member
of a reigning or previously reigning dynasty of Europe, and the Choteks were neither.
Emperor Franz Joseph refused to authorize the marriage until several influential individuals
in European leadership, including Pope Leo, supported the love-sick Franz, indicating that
the disagreement was undermining the stability of the empire. Franz Joseph finally agreed on
the condition that the descendants of Franz and his wife would not be heirs to the throne
(Andrade, 2017). The events surrounding the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
caused real threats to the survival of Austria.
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand Fuelled Ethnic Conflicts Within the
Austro-Hungarian Empire.
