BABY THERESA'S CASE 2
Baby Theresa’s case presents several moral issues, some of which can be morally
justified. I side with the parents because even though their baby was anencephalic, they sought to
make something good out of this tragedy. They could benefit other children without harming
Theresa since her organs would not serve her as she was not conscious and would die anyway.
The argument that people should not be used as means might not apply here. No deceit,
trickery, or manipulation was used to get the benefits out of her. Since using people is wrong if it
violates their autonomy, this case does not use her against her wishes since she had none
(Rachels & Rachels, 2007).
The ethical issue of the wrongness of killing would argue that it is wrong to kill Theresa
and use her organs to save other children. Theresa’s case would be an exception. She is not
conscious, did not have a chance of surviving, and was to die soon. Theresa would have served
an indispensable purpose if she donated her organs to save other sick babies.
