Why Study Humanities?
Studies on humanities indicate convincing reasons as to why they should be studied.
However, with the many challenges facing the world, the importance of their study has been
questioned with some factions arguing in favor of the studying of STEM subjects as the solution
to the problems that inflict the world. However, this argument is ill-informed because the world
faces many challenges that require unique solutions that can be formulated from insights
acquired by studying humanities such as history, philosophy, art, and religion.
Cicero gives a persuasive reason for taking a class such as Humanities 101. The
importance of studying humanities cannot be overlooked. Like Cicero puts it to be ignorant of
what occurred before you were born is to remain a child. Without an understanding or
recognition of the importance of basic aspects and tenets of our society such as democracy or our
cultural diversities, human conflict is an unending possibility. The history of our society depicts
a clear picture of what awaits us when we think we can overlook the study of such fundamental
issues. We remain ignorant of how they have disoriented the society in past with wars, violence,
cruelty, and injustices thus undermining a favorable environment for STEM development
(“Ancient Greek Civilization,” n.d.). To remain immune, we need to understand the history of
aspects within us as this will help to build a good present and future. However, by ignoring them,
we position ourselves as children who are clueless about what it has taken them to be at the point
at where they are and how this affects their present and future. This is why a class such as
humanities 101 should be tied to every course in college.
There are other reasons for studying humanities especially in the modern world with
health and ecological challenges. First, by studying humanities and especially history, we learn
from our mistakes. Many wars such as the Greek and Persian wars resulted from issues such as
the desire to assert superiority and expansion of territories (“Ancient Greek civilization,” n.d.).
