The Parable of the Sower
The novel parable of the sower is an exciting book with specific unique characteristics,
especially in the structure and presentation of ideas. Even though the novel's story is fictitious, it
is presented to make everyone reading it believe its true. The story of the parable of the sower is
written when the U.S is going through civilization. The writer focuses on different topics and
themes in this novel which have other explanations and meaning essential to everyone reading
this book. One of the themes in the book is about religion, hope, and change. Religion is a crucial
factor in a community because it builds and increases people's hope, leading to changes in their
lifestyle and the way they operate their daily activities.
The author of the book Octavia Butler brings out religion through Lauren, one of the
book's characters. According to the author, in a crumbling society, religion is the only thing that
seems to be thriving (Butler, 5). I agree with this statement because religion creates hope for the
future. After all, the members of a particular religion believe in God, and God is power, infinite,
irresistible, inevitable, indifferent, and is also pliable. These make the believers hope that their
God will always make things work for them in a tied-up situation.
However, at the beginning of the book. Lauren, the protagonist, begins by questioning the
idea of God. She grew up in a religious home where her dad was a pastor; this did not prevent
her from having questions about some of the principles that she was taught at a tender age.

However, this becomes contradicting to her since, in the book of Job, God himself says that he is
the one who made everything and He knows about everything in the universe; therefore, no one
has any right of questioning whatever He does with any of it. This statement from the bible tells
us that God is the creator of the universe and that He is well aware of everything that goes on in
it, and that no one has any right of questioning Him in whatever he does with anything.
The Novel protagonist has conflicted ideas and views towards Christianity, leading her to
form a religious community referred to as the Earth seed. According to Lauren, Christianity is
depicted as giving false hope against life's brutal and chaotic reality. According to my
understanding, my position in this scenario is that everyone always believes in whatever he/she
was taught when they were brought up. Most religious people tend to come from a religious
families with a strong religious background. Therefore, this usually results or instead influences
an individual’s religious beliefs. On the other hand, it is everyone's choice to decide whether they
will abide by their teachings while being brought up.
According to Earth seed’s religion, they believe that God is changing and that every
member of this religion must accept that change is inevitable and often destructive. They also
believe that they have the power of shaping God (Butler, 143). His religion offers a real and
tangible hope that is not provided anywhere by Christianity. Therefore, the members of this
religion always strive to change the world by themselves instead of praying for justice and mercy
from God. Lauren explains that to Travis, whom they met while working north. She tells him
that their God does not care about them at all. She says that that is one reason that made her care
about herself and create Earth seeds to shape God.
I'm afraid I have to disagree with Lauren's point that God does not care about Christians.
This statement is not true because the bible tells us that our God is listening and that e cares
