NATURE AND NURTURE 2
The nature vs. nurture argument concerns the extent to which some characteristics of
behavior are influenced by inherited (i.e., genetic) or acquired (i.e., taught) factors. Nature relates
to what people think of pre-wiring and it is influenced by genetic inheritance in conjunction to
some other biological factors. Nurture is commonly defined as the impact of external variables
on an individual after conception, such as the product of exposure, life events, and learning.
Psychology has been able to measure the relative contributions of nature and nurture in terms of
specific psychological traits thanks to behavioral genetics. Most psychological researchers are
now interested in researching how nature and nurture interact in a variety of qualitatively distinct
ways, rather than advocating extreme nativist or naturist ideas.
In psychology, self-actualization is defined as realizing one's full potential. Because most
people are working to address more pressing demands, being genuinely self-actualized is the
exception rather than the rule. There are several characteristics of self- actualized persons. One
of these characteristics is having peak experiences. Having peak experiences refers to Feelings of
limitless horizons opening up to the vision, the sensation of being simultaneously more powerful
and helpless than one has ever been before, ecstasy, wonder, and awe, the loss of one's place in
time and space, and finally, the conviction that something extremely important and valuable had
happened, so that the subject was transformed and strengthened to some extent (Cherry, 2021).
Other characteristics include having self-acceptance and a democratic world view, being
realistic, being problem-centered, and being autonomous.
