Running head: ONLINE MARKETING RESEARCH 1
Online marketing research is extremely popular today for a variety of reasons. It is
inexpensive, convenient, and covers a large number of people easily. Some of the techniques
used for online marketing research include data mining, data analytics, and online surveys.
However, online marketing research also has several drawbacks and issues. Perhaps the most
notorious issue associated with online marketing research is privacy invasion. Researchers and
marketing professionals collect a huge amount of people’s data for analysis and many times
without their consent. This data is then used to identify patterns, preferences, purchase behavior,
and needs to market the right products to the customers. For example, try searching for a laptop
on Google. Check out various brands, their specifications, and their prices. After a while, you
will start noticing laptop advertisements on every website you visit. They realize that you seem
to be interested in buying a new laptop so they immediately start marketing your laptops. Google
even tracks your location history and daily activities to improve its services. For example, you
visit a local Walmart and Google would ask you later to give a review and describe your
experience. Privacy has become a major issue because companies monitor our daily lives in the
name of marketing research and there is nothing hidden from them.
I do not think privacy is a major issue when it comes to online surveys though. Online
surveys only ask you specific questions and do not track you or gather your data without consent.
They ask your opinion or preferences regarding something. For example, I have taken several
online surveys on YouTube where they ask me if I have heard about certain brands or if I have
seen any commercials. Sometimes they ask which brand I would prefer to buy if I had to etc.
None of those invade my privacy compared to data mining and data analytics used by
companies.
