Case Study
Diana Marcus is a ten-year-old girl living with her parents in Arizona, United States.
Diana has one brother, Declan, who is three years old. Diana and Declan live with their parents,
Diana and Bradley. Diana and Bradley are African American. They live in a rented house in a
deprived neighborhood. The community has numerous cases of domestic violence, robbery,
criminal activities, and drug abuse. Diana's mother, Sara, was a teen mother when she had Diana
four years ago, and she is now 26 years old. Bradley is 29 years old. Diana's biological father is
44-year-old Marcus, who, after getting Diana abandoned, the mother Sara, takes all
responsibilities and care for their daughter. Marcus is married and has another family. Sara raised
her daughter alone until four years ago when he met Brandon, father to Declan and now the
stepfather to Diana.
Sara is a heroin addict; when Diana was two years she engaged in prostitution until she
met Brandon. Brandon was Sara's client, and he frequented her place for about four months
before they decided to move in together and start a family. Brandon is addicted to marijuana and
cocaine, as well as an alcohol addict. Brandon works as a casual laborer and depends on daily
jobs to earn a living for his family. Brandon provided for Sara and the children for the first year
they lived as a family. However, Brandon's addiction affected his role as a father and husband to
Sara, leading to family problems. When Brandon failed to provide, Sara went back to her
prostitution work. Brandon has been arrested two times for stealing. In both cases, he was
released for lack of sufficient evidence to incriminate him.
