APN Scope of Practice in Maryland.
Maryland just like in other states in the USA has an organized system through which
nursing practice is regulated. The scope of practice in Maryland is regulated through State
regulatory bodies which have different responsibilities in managing, certification, licensure and
practice of an APN.
Nurse practitioners in Maryland are allowed to practise independently following the
passing of the Full Practice Act of 2015. New nurse practitioners not previously registered in the
state or compact states are required to nominate a mentor when applying for certification; the
mentor should be a registered nurse practitioner practicing in Maryland or a registered physician
practicing in Maryland. The mentor retains the mentorship status to the nurse practitioner for 18
months.
The scope of practice of Nurse practitioners in Maryland is detailed in the Code of
Maryland Regulations (COMAR), the practice of nurse practitioners is regulated by The
Maryland Board of Nursing. The scope of nursing practitioner is detailed in COMAR 10. 27. 07.
02 which indicates both practice allowed in Maryland and the regulations that govern the
practice. COMAR 10.27.07.07 provides for the dispensing regulations for nurse practitioners.
The State of Maryland scope of practice contained in COMAR 10.27.07.02, allows the
nurse practitioner to independently conduct detailed physical assessment on patients, collect
patient data and history and provide medical diagnosis for short term conditions as well as stable

chronic conditions. The nurse practitioner is allowed in diagnosing patients to order for
diagnostic investigations and interpret the investigations and prescribe drugs as per the
regulations. A nurse practitioner can offer emergency services to patients and is authorized to
refer patients to other health providers as deemed necessary. The scope of practice allows nurse
practitioners in Maryland to give a “do not resuscitate” order and allows them to Maryland
Emergency Medical Services form and witness advance directives.
Nurse practitioners are allowed to complete birth certificate information both medical and
the dates as required. A nurse practitioner can also complete death certificates for bodies which
were under their care and when medical practitioners fail to take charge of the body. They can
also file for a replacement of death certificates. The nurse practitioners are allowed to conduct
assessments and propose for special considerations to an individual by the Department of
Transport based on health concerns. Other duties a nurse practitioner is allowed to conduct with
his scope include certification for utility client’s need for life support equipment offer training
and certification for Insect Sting Emergency treatment Program.
Nurse practitioners are allowed to prepare and dispense drugs schedule II to IV to
patients within their areas of practice and maintain records of the drugs dispensed. Drug
dispensations should be done within the allowed dispensing authorities of nurse practitioners in
Maryland. Nurse practitioners adhere to labelling procedures for drugs and maintain proper
records such as prescription files with separate schedule II prescriptions which should be
maintained for up to at least five years.
The scope of practice provides a direction on the expected job description for nurse
practitioners and is critical in harmonizing patient care and reducing any errors. Nurse
practitioners are required to practice within their areas of specialization.

Networking and marketing strategies
As a nurse practitioner I can benefit immensely through professional networking. I can
establish professional networking through professional bodies and other groups that link nurse
professionals to jobs, trainings and peers in the profession. Professional networking provides
nurse petitioners with essential information about such information as crucial training needs to
retain credentials, available workshops and conferences that are essential to career development.
Connections and contacts that are established through networks, provide breakthroughs in job
opportunities and hence can contribute in career growth.
In Maryland, there exists local nurse practitioner associations which I can join both at a
local and regional level. The Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland is a regional association
through which I can participate in regional nursing issues and participate in addressing issues
affecting practice within my state. Through such an organization I will be able to meet and
interact with peers, discuss and get advice on how to excel in nursing practice. The association
also help to identify available job opportunities. Local associations provide similar opportunities
at a local level where networking is more frequent. Other networking opportunities occur
through the use of technology; ENP Network is one such avenue which offers nurse practitioners
an online avenue to access and connect to other nurse practitioners, professional nurse
practitioner associations and job opportunities which are advertised on the site.
