Rebecca Protten personified the concept of social
responsibility. Sold into slavery as a young girl,
Protten chose to develop a solid Christian faith upon
gaining her freedom. Her unwavering faith and
strongly developed literacy skills resulted in her
becoming one of the first Black women to earn
ordainment as a minister. This ministry allowed
Protten to work robustly to convert and teach slaves
across many continents (Smith, 2020, p. 55). Also,
Protten advocated for the right to educate
slaves. Therefore, the way Protten chose to live her
life stressed the importance of all people having the
opportunity to obtain an education. This emphasis
included provided education to slaves, who society
felt did not benefit from learning. In other words,
Protten felt that acquiring an education was
beneficial to all members of society (Smith, 2020, p.
55).
Modern educators must teach and act as examples
to our students according to the Christian faith. For
example, Philippians 4:9 (English Standard
Version, 2009), states take that which you have
learned and witnessed in me, and practice as such.
Doing so will create peace through God, and
therefore, he will remain with you. Also,
educators are responsible for safeguarding that
every person has an equal opportunity to learn.
This equality should be consistent regardless of
any differences, especially the varying
circumstances experienced throughout life.

Benjamin Rush personifies the disposition of
commitment. Benjamin Rush was a man of many
talents. For instance, Rush signed the Declaration of
Independence, acted as a surgeon in the Continental
Army, promoted change as a social activist and
revolutionized many theories on education (Smith,
2020).
To be an effective educator requires commitment.
Such commitment requires a willingness to adapt
to and accept changes within society that continue
to shape the field of education (Gordon et al.,
2019). Adaptability and acceptance to change are
themes in biblical scripture. For instance,
according to Ecclesiastes 3:1 (English Standard

Regarding education specifically, Rush fought for
the right to educate African Americans and women
and advocated for free public schools for all (Smith,
2020). More specifically, Rush worked tirelessly to
create change on a variety of platforms. As a result,
many felt that his actions and dedication to such
causes were revolutionary for its time.

must maintain their commitment to the learning
process by continuing to learn themselves.

One philosopher who relied on the process of
reflection is Soren Kierkegaard. According to
Kierkegaard, the power of choice greatly influence
how knowledge is acquired. More specifically,
Kierkegaard believed that actual knowledge is
subjective. In other words, subjective knowledge
relies on the experiences of an individual (Smith,
2020, p. 181).
As society becomes more technologically complex,
the modern education system is adapting to include
aspects of technology. According to Young and
Nichols (2017), using technology in the classroom
creates communication, collaboration, and
reflection between students (p. 11).
