Do some research on the history of the telephone, telephony, and voice
telecommunications. The ERR this week have some interesting articles....
There have been a number of significant technological changes to the telephone service
since the invention by Bell. The technology and service has evolved drastically in 100
years. Besides the actual invention of the telephone, describe one significant technical
innovation in voice telephony prior to 1975.
Detail the reasons for your choice. Why is your choice significant? What did it
contribute to the industry and/or subscribers?
This DQ is about regular two-way, home-phone-type VOICE telecommunications in the
United States; Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS). It is not about data,
television/radio broadcasting, or the internet. The telephone and telephone service. If
you do not answer within this guideline, I will ask you to post a new answer.

My choice for the week 1 discussion question is the implementation of the world's
first mobile telephone.
The reason for this being that if the technology of the telephone just stopped where it was and
never moved out of the homes, businesses, and landlines that it originally operated from, it may
have eventually phased itself out for something else. Similar to the development of the computer,
the first model only added and subtracted and took the switching of tubes and other parts in order
to get it to function properly, if it stopped there we wouldn't be submitting all of our assignments
online or even be able to communicate with the majority of the people we know today. Same
concept, if the mobile phone wasn't developed or understood as a significant advancement the
small digital phones we use today that sometimes store the most important information of an
individual would have either never came to be or just never progressed as quickly as it did. All of
these examples do go into why the choice is that significant as well.
As for what it contributed to the industry; it seemed to have sparked a largely competitive market
for progression between Bell and Motorola when Martin Cooper developed the first cellular
phone that didn't need the 80 pounds of equipment Bell's car phone had. And with the
competitive advancement of telephone technology we eventually made it to where we are today
with the Apple iPhone competing with Motorola's now popular Droid system based phones.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various modulation techniques of
analog signals?
This question took me back to when I was in the Navy. I say this because I was and
Radio Man(RM) or what is no called a Information Systems Technician (IT). When I
was in we had to learn about all the different types of modulation frequencies that
were used for communications ans believe or not analog signals are still being used.
When it comes to analog modulation there are three different types used they are:
Amplitude Modulation or A.M.
Frequency Modulation or F.M.
Phase Modulation or P.M.
When it comes to Amplitude Modulation or A.M. there are some advantages that it
bring to the table:
Amplitude Modulation or A.M. coverage area is wider than FM because
atmospheric propagation
Amplitude Modulation or A.M is cheaper and not as complex as Frequency
Modulation or F.M.
Some disadvantages are:
Amplitude Modulation or A.M. is wasteful, in terms of bandwidth, because it
occupies twice the bandwidth of the modulation signal.
Amplitude Modulation or A.M is a power consuming monster because it
transmits the carrier along with the sidebands.
Amplitude Modulation or A.M is more susceptible to noise interference from
other sources.
