3-1 PROJECT ONE SUBMISSION 2
I. Introduction
When we think about the concept of public administration, we often reflect on its
definition which is simply the government in action. In most cases, the concept of public
administration is often associated with politics which isn’t entirely unusual because politics has a
role within public administration. But there is so much more to this concept and it’s particularly
important to maintain a sincere knowledge of this concept since it refers to one of the most
notable aspects of our society. We may not always agree with it, but the government is
responsible for a number of different things and everyone should be aware of these
responsibilities even if they don’t work within the government. With this idea in mind, public
administration should absolutely be considered as its own field of study because maintaining a
firm knowledge of this concept can help to keep public administration in order so that all of
society is benefitted to the fullest potential both presently as well as in the future.
II. History of Public Administration
To reiterate, the simple definition of public administration is the government in action.
However, there are actually multiple definitions of public administration which are based on the
different aspects in which public administration addresses such as legal, managerial,
occupational and political aspects. As such, we find that public administration is a rather broad
academic discipline that realistically cannot maintain one central definition. However defined, its
vast scope encompasses whatever governments do (Shafritz et al, 2017). Essentially, public
administration is an academic discipline which focuses on preparing civilians to work within
public services. Over the course of the last century, public administration has been shaped to
become a profound field of study thanks to the efforts of several notable people such as
Woodrow Wilson.
