Answer by Day 3
Write a 200 word response to the following questions:
· What is a packet? What is packet switching?
· How would you explain the concept of packet switching?
· What are the advantages and disadvantages of packet switching over circuit switching?
Answer:
What is a packet?
A packet is on of the most common ways that information is sent of the web or from node to
node communications. A packet is divided into three main sections they are:
Header
Payload
Footer
The Packet header carries the all infomation about the data contained in the payload. The header
also holds information on the length of the packet, packet number, the source IP and destination
IP.
The payload is exactly like it sounds it contains all the data within that packet for example if you
where sending a email with a photo then it would contain the photo data and everything related
to it.
The footer contains the information the lets the destination IP or computer that the packet has
ended and no more information will be received.
Though this is a very basic outline of a packet there is a lot more to packets then a lot of people
realize. With TCP/IP packets the information that is contains the digital finger print of you
system called a MAC address and IP of your system. Without going to deep into this it is very
important to remember that what ever you do on a computer can be tracked and this is all thanks
to the "Packet".
What is packet switching?
Packet switching is almost like packet fragmentation, but is a lot different for the purpose of its
use. Packet switching is when a packet is send over the wire, but it is split up into multiple
separate sections. These sections do not have to take the same path to the final destination,
because with in the packet as you recall from what was stated before contains all the information

of the destination IP. This means that even though the packet has be split in to multiple sections
and each section is taking a different route, they all end up at the same place. This is the same
way that ATM operates or Asynchronous Transfer Mode works.
How would you explain the concept of packet switching?
The whole concept behind this idea was to provide the best mare to do more with less. I know
this may sound a little crazy but packet switching allows multi tasking to take place on the wire.
This means that packet switching allowed the ability to route multiple communication packets
over the same network wire at a much lower over head, which allowed for more flexibility and
throughput on a network.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of packet switching over circuit switching?
The following are advantages of Packet switching:
Takes full advantage of the bandwidth available
provides security
is not affected if there is a line outage
The following are disadvantages of Packet switching:
Once the packet is sent the data can get lost in transfer and become corrupt.
Not the best for streaming media
When under heavy use it can create a bottle neck which can cause delays
The following are advantages of circuit switching:
Once in use the circuit is dedicated to that call only
will always use full bandwidth
best quality of service
The following are disadvantages of circuit switching:
Takes a long time to setup in regards to the circuit
Was created only for Voice traffic, but can support data however this was not what it was
designed for
