The article by Hopf (2010) talks about how food influences people's moods. Food and
mood have a complex relationship (Hopf, 2010). There are factors that dictate this type of
relationship. Some factors include the amount of food consumed by an individual,
macronutrients found in food, the dietary history of a person, and their age. The article talks
about a study that was conducted on 184 adults. The study concluded that the effects of the meals
were different for males and females (Hopf, 2010). After a meal rich in carbohydrates, female
subjects claimed they experienced greater sleepiness while their counterparts reported greater
calmness. A diet that is rich in carbohydrates can play a significant role in relieving depression.
Carbohydrates play a crucial role in increasing serotonin synthesis. It's vital to note that an
individual's mood is elevated due to increased serotonin (Hopf, 2010). On the other hand,
protein-rich diets decrease serotonin levels.
The article also notes that chocolate also affects an individual's mood. Consuming
chocolate leads to a pleasant feeling while at the same time reducing tension. Essentially, many
people tend to consume chocolate when they feel tired, depressed, angry, bored, or even when
stressed. An individual can have a drug-like addiction to chocolate. There are psychoactive
chemicals found in chocolate tyramine and phenylethylamine. They have a similar effect to
caffeine in an individual's brain. However, these substances are in low concentration. Caffeine is
one of the stimulants that is consumed a lot by people. Caffeine influences an individual's
alertness and reaction time. Approximately 120,000 tons of caffeine are consumed per year.
Through the article, one will better understand how food affects an individual's mood.
