Background
The purpose of this study is to provide three data visualizations for three different audiences
of Massachusetts. The State Budget office uses data visualization to reserve and allocates
emergency resources for the storm's most affected areas. Second, the State Emergency
Management Agency (EMA) uses data visualization to analyze storm damage and risk
assessment. The third visualization for the public enhances the importance of preparing for
severe weather events. The primary source of data (2015-2016 weather report) for this analysis is
the National Centers for Environmental Information. The data set contains a list of several storm
events, including storm start/end date, injury, death, property damage, etc. These data can help us
identify storm trends over the years and warn the state government to avoid potential risks. This
analysis aims to develop a concept of how much damage the storm will cause so that the state
government can prepare for maintenance and other emergency services before the storm hits the
state.
This analysis is based on the research question, "what is the most common weather pattern in
Massachusetts, which we should be aware of, and how much weather can affect the state." The
data set appears accurate, relevant, predictable, and enough to deliver the intended message.
However, there is still some uncertainty, as the storm's trends and patterns are only estimated.
There may be more/fewer storm events in the state, and more/fewer emergency services may be
needed.
Audience Need
Each audience's message will be the same; be prepared for severe weather events but in
distinct ways with different goals. The State Budget Office uses this information to estimate the
budget. They will understand how much money is needed to make up for the damage caused by
