Case 2 - Wildfire Entertainment (It is attached below as a PDF) Case Questions  1. Describe the context Wildfire faced in the early days of its development (Why might a single organizational structure not be effective?) 2. What are the pros and cons of the three main organizational archetypes that Wildfire used: Functional, Matrix/hybrid, Divisional? 3. In a context of rapid growth, how can a technology start-up firm know when the organizational structure should be changed  critical review to at least 1 posting by a classmate Wildfire struggled to find its groove for quite some time. The corporation heads worked tirelessly to find what worked for them. Wildfire has everything going for them. They were putting out hot commodity. In theory, there shouldn’t have been much of an issue because they had so much going for them. There was a lot of opportunity surrounding them. They were bringing new things to the world of gaming and things to offer that other competitors didn’t. Everyone was interested in them. However, though they had all of these things working in their favor, Wildfire was very internally unstructured. They weren’t playing their cards in their own favor, ultimately causing harm to themselves. They were using their resources in ways that would improve the areas in which they were struggling. Functional Pros: A functional organizational archetype allowed for job specialization. Because a person that was doing a specific job with specialized in that job, it made it easy for that person to do their job and do it very well. This decreased error an increased productivity within different divisions. Cons: A functional organizational archetype work to make the boss happy, rather than the consumers. Because there is job specialization, it left room for one function (Ex. service function) head to become easily overwhelmed with the tasks he was given And in turn lose customer focus because he was more concerned with making the CEO happy. This also makes a Corporation slow because they lack communication. Matrix Pros: A matrix organizational archetype allowed for more focus to be on the customer. This meant that the quality of products that were being put out we're better which meant the consumer was happier. There's better communication because this archetype lacks long channels of communication. Cons: as product growth occurs, there is heightened resource confusion. People become confused on where to report to who was responsible for who, and what individual priorities are. Divisional Pros: A divisional organizational archetype allows for room with experimentation. this archetype also has split divisions meaning that each division can work individually, and their failures won't affect the company as a whole as badly. Cons: A divisional organizational archetype requires a lot of resources. Because this archetype has split divisions, there are more division heads which requires more funding. As any company grows, it becomes evident that things need to change when old or current technology practices and means of doing things become outdated. Things that seem to work really well like means of communicating and means of interacting with partners inside and outside of the company start to feel like they're just slowing the company down, rather than boosting it forward. When a company grows rapidly, it only seems fitting to constantly update and remold how affirm functions. Whether it is the number of employees or the amount of consumers that engage with the firm, it is and individual firms responsibility to detect what exact changes have to be made for continuous growth.
