JAZZ CONCERT REPORT 2
Jazz concert report
1. Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie- “Hot House” (1951)
Charlie parker won the award for the best alto saxophonist man of 1951, while Dizzy
Gillespie won the prize for being one of the best trumpet men of all time. The melody of the song
is syncopated. There is variation and change in rhythm, making it irregular, preventing the song
from being boring (Ajack2boys, 2013). Charlie Parker’s improvisational style is full of flawless
swings and instrumental skills with chromatic lines and continuous arpeggios. Dizzie Gillespie’s
solo style is more harmonic with different compositions and sounds, increasing the flow of the
rhythm. Parker and Gillespie’s solo performances are technically difficult as they require more
tension in the version and inversion within the performance while ensuring flow in rhythm is
maintained (Ajack2boys, 2013). The drummers preserve the song's rhythm while complimenting
the plays of the soloists and keeping time. The style of Jazz used is the Bebop style as there is a
combination of rapid change in the various chords with a fast tempo and instrumental skill
combined with improvisation and harmonization (Ajack2boys, 2013). The solo performances
from Parker and Gillespie are unique and sophisticated, making their accounts attractive due to
the various improvisations and instrumental skills.
2. Miles Davis with John Coltrane- “So what” (1959)
Miles and Coltrane’s Jazz style is described as modal jazz, usually known for its
elongated melodies. Chords are less emphasized, focusing on the composers' melodies, emotions,
and rhythm, giving the soloist more freedom (Davis, 2019). The melody of the song is played
using a double bass. The Miles’ solo style comprises short and long phrases, repeating a few
notes, having a melodic peak, and playing a lyrical passage over a baseline. Coltrane’s solo style
is improvised with more intense fast notes and repeated lower register phrases with extensions
