IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON FOOD SECURITY 2
Introduction
Climate change is a global phenomenon that is perhaps the most pressing environmental
challenge the world faces today. The global rise in temperatures has become a threat because of
the consequences it brings. With rising temperatures and other factors that influence climate
change, the world is losing various natural resources that threaten environmental health. The
impacts of the deterioration of environmental health are marked by the rise in sea levels due to the
melting of ice covers due to an increase in temperatures. Sea level rises to lead to hazards like
flooding that destroy biodiversity and bring about consequences like food insecurity.
Climate affects the economic health of many countries. For instance, countries that depend
on agriculture for food and financial stability are at risk of losing their economic solidity and food
security due to loss of crop productivity due to climate change. Climate changes affect the global
food chain. Diminished access to food reduces demand, and consequently, the prices of food soars.
Many people in developing countries who live below the poverty line can't afford to purchase food
at such increased prices due to shortage.
Global warming and climate change
Global warming and climate change are two terms used interchangeably in the scientific
world even though they have distinct differences in their meaning and use. According to Mechler
et al. (4), global warming is the gradual heating of the atmosphere, oceans, and the earth's surface
due to rising global temperatures observed since the 1850s, between 1850 and 1900. The period
was before the world started industrialization. The rising temperatures have been steady over the
years since scientists began making observations. They have had a tremendous impact on the
earth's climate system, heating it consistently for the longest time now.
