Introduction
The digital age has opened up numerous opportunities that have made communication
and interactions easier. People can socially interact with others across the world instantly without
distance acting as a barrier thanks to technology and the internet. However, the digital age has
also brought some challenges. In 2013, Facebook, one of the most popular social media
platforms in the world, collaborated with Cambridge Analytica to collect user data without
consent for political reasons. While both companies later got to answer for this act, this shows
the extent to which people’s data is used against their wish. The Great Hack is a documentary
about the scandal. It provides great insight into hacking, data safety, and cybersecurity and the
extent to which technology has robbed people of their privacy.
Computers and smartphones as weapons
The benefits of technology in the modern-day are tremendous. However, like all other
things, it has its negative impacts. While computers and smartphones sought to promote
connectivity and interactions, some have turned them to weapons and data mining tools that they
use to gain information and access to people’s private lives without their consent and use the data
for their benefits. To analyze the use of computers and smartphones as weapons as portrayed in
the film, it is essential to understand the meaning of the term weapon. People often associate the
term with things such as guns that can inflict bodily harm and physical damage. This is only one
definition of the term.
The term weapon also refers to any means that one may use in a battle, a contest, or a
