1. Read Confucianism in Smith page 154-195 and answer the following Questions.
Read 'The First Teacher.'
Smith describes Confucius' career as a failure. What does he mean? Also, what was Confucius'
ultimate destiny? I.e. what did he end up doing for a living?
Smith considered Confucius career as a failure because his perspectives in accordance with
politics differ with his rulers. Confucius destiny is to be a teacher

interesting.
I chose the saying “What you do not wish done to yourself, do not do to others.” This is actually
a cliché quote which we usually hear. I find it always interesting because this should always be
observed in our day-to-day activities. Avoid oppressing others because you also dont want to
be oppressed.
3. Read 'The Problem Confucius Faced.'
How would you describe the social situation in Confucius' day?
Every day would probably be as chaotic and bloodthirsty since China is in a social anarchy
scenario.
4. What is spontaneous tradition?
Spontaneous tradition are natural and conventional behaviors which constituted to the welfare of
tribes in many years and through generations
5. What two things are interesting about spontaneous tradition according to Smith? (162)
(1) The phenomenal capacity to keep the asocial acts intact; and (2) the spontaneous,
thoughtless way of socialization
