Police Eras
The community policing era plays a crucial role in the development of today's view of
police officers. Primarily, this era depicts modern-day crime prevention. It is because of
integrating the community policing strategy into every policing program within the police
department. As such, police work has not been about one tactic in crime prevention. Instead, it
is about multiple approaches. Community policing has been the philosophy behind
organizational strategies that address crime and social disorder through problem-solving tactics
(Birzer & Roberson, 2015). Hence, this era has made crime prevention to be a shared
responsibility between the community and the police as seen today.
More so, the community policing era depicts the contemporary response to crime.
Community policing strategies focus significantly on two goals; crime prevention and
responding to it (Birzer & Roberson, 2015). Nonetheless, the ultimate objective is to ensure
the safety of the public or community. Hence, response to crime is achieved through
coordination between the community, law enforcement, and other public safety organizations.
The community policing era also builds the framework for forming mutually beneficial
relationships between police officers and the community (Birzer & Roberson, 2015). As such,
police officers must embrace working and constantly communicating with the community to
solve existing problems. Through this, individuals in the community are made stakeholders in
their safety (Birzer & Roberson, 2015). More so, police officers are community residents and
need to be advocates for their particular community. Thus, police officers today have become
influential and visible community members, with significant influence over the contemporary
public's perception of safety.
