Idealized Versions of Reality in Pride and Prejudice compared to the Tempest.
Pride and Prejudice, an exemplary novel written by Jane Austen, is concisely a sarcastic
account of a mother looking for a suitable proposal for her five daughters. Each daughter has a
different nature, and this novel explores the views on love, marriage and companionship.
Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” is a story of brothers' betrayal for power with love forgotten. It is
the story of empathy and admiration of a daughter who has only seen and heard her father. This
thesis compares both these works and the realistic approach that interrupts the novel's fantasy
and shows the nitty-gritty reality. The main themes explored in this essay are the comparison of
Austen’s reasons for marriage, pride, and prejudice with love, betrayal and marriage in the
Tempest.
Marriage today is also based on having good fortune and the women still need to be
married for financial stability. The opening sentence in Austen’s story is weaved masterfully,
implying that the two things are essential in life, marriage and good fortune. A man with good
social status needs a wife, and the five unmarried Bennet girls know that to live a respectful life,
they have to find a suitable spouse for themselves. On page 20, Austen shares that marriage and
happiness are two rare things that may or may not occur together. It is essential to get married
rather than developing an understanding. After marriage, there is enough time for the husband
and wife to explore each other defects or rather negative and positive sides. This pragmatic view

of Charlotte contrasts with Elizabeth’s romantic worldview. But the reality of this philosophy
genuinely reflects the unfortunate reality of the present world when living in a patriarchal
society. Women need to marry, or they will lack respect and financial security. In contrast, an
unmarried man will only be lonely.
People these days have become self-centered, the social media is an example of the fact
that people don’t look beyond their nose and are ready to manipulate anything to attain their
goals. In Pride and Prejudice, Charlotte advices Elizabeth to overplay her feeling and employ
manipulation to secure her future for a woman to secure her future. Elizabeth and Darcy both
believe above pride and vanity, but rather it is the opposite. The first impression of Darcy shows
that he is a highly proud person voicing his opinion on a different issue, not agreeing with
anyone. Everyone who interacted with him, especially the Bennets, feels that they would be
grateful not to meet him again. This shows that Darcy's first impression is horrendous. Both
Darcy and Elizabeth have an incredibly huge pride due to which they are unable to comprehend
their true feelings. With time, it is observed that they mellow each other and are eventually
forced to admit that they are a part of a greater society where they have responsibilities to others.
They need to change themselves for their family. This manipulation is also seen in the Tempest
when Prospero narrates his past to Miranda.
The present day people have expectation from others, family or colleagues, they only
work when they experience negative emotion. Prospero narrates the story after he inflicts the
storm on his brother Antonia so that Miranda will show empathy towards her father on his
negative use of power. The narration is done in a manner where Prospero becomes an object of
pity. The main reason for the betrayal is the blind trust he exercised on Antonio. Prospero does
not want his daughter to trust someone blindly as he trusted his brother to rule the kingdom on
