Social Co-existence of Marginalized Individuals in Societies
Considering the intersection of divergent social vectors or elements such as race, gender,
socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation is essential. These aspects influence the streamlined
nature of social co-existence since it influences individuals’ behaviors and attitudes. In this view,
focusing on gender inequality, social discrimination due to intersectionality, and diversity of
sexual orientation enables appreciation of how they influence the life experience of marginalized
communities.
Reflection
Diversity in sexual orientation is a vital topic since it elucidates it and enabled me to
understand how individuals with alternative sexual orientations experience life differently
(Rothenberg, 2001, p 69). Compulsory heterosexuality is a biased concept that most individuals
in a society accept as the default norm (Rich, 1980, p 361). In this view, individuals with
alternative sexual orientations have challenging life experiences when trying to fit into society. I
can apply these concepts in real life by eschewing the traditional view of sexuality and fostering
acceptance of alternative sexual orientations. This application will enhance my interpersonal
interactions with all individuals in society. For instance, it will allow me to enhance positive

interactions with coworkers from the LGBTQ community without any relationship
discrepancies.
Gender inequality also affects the life experiences of individuals in society,
predominantly women. The skewed perception of gender roles and social constructs of gender
accounts for multiple gender inequalities (Lorber, 1994, p 1). Insights from this source have
enabled me to learn that gender has other definitions that deviate from the western societies that
foster legitimate gendering, which defines gender using procreative differences (Lorber, 1994, p
3; Hondagneu-Sotelo, Pierrette, and Ernestine Avila, 1997, p 551)integrating these insights
into my personal life through rethinking and revising my definition of gender roles without
leveraging male and female differences. For instance, it can allow me to limit unwanted gender-
based discrimination of colleagues when looking for collaborators for a project.
The intersectionality of divergent sexual elements accounts for more challenging life
experiences of a marginalized population. Social discrimination leveraging race is a common
plague accounting for the numerous policies to mitigate its influences. Collective, Combahee
River (1997) alludes that social discrimination significantly impacted African American women
who the society required to act lady-like to avoid objectification and discrimination from white
people (p. 211). Furthermore, Truth (n.d.) adds that African American women did not benefit
from the social accommodations that their white counterparts received, which made them
question their gender. These insights have improved my competencies concerning the
intersectionality of race and gender and how they impact the quality of life of women. I can
apply these competencies in life by advocating for the appreciation of marginalized populations,
especially African American women from low-socioeconomic impact. This action is relevant
since it will improve the quality of life of individuals impacted by the intersectionality of three
