Air pollution
Air pollution is a significant factor that endangers human health in the contemporary
world. For example, nine out of ten inhale contaminated air, resulting in the mortality of about 7
million people annually. Additionally, air pollution has tragic consequences on children’s health.
Globally, 14% of minors between 5 to 18 years of age suffer from asthma health conditions
associated with air pollution (World Health Organization, 2019). Furthermore, air pollution also
causes juvenile cancer. When pregnant women are subjected to air pollution, it can result in the
delivery of infants with cognitive impairment. Air pollution has also been known to cause
reasoning deficiency in adults.
Air pollution has long-term and short-term effects on human health. Short-term effects of
air pollution on human health are temporary, while long-term effects can last for years or a
lifetime. Short-term effects of air pollution result in easily recoverable health effects. Diseases
associated with short-term exposure to air pollution include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease, deep coughs, asthma, respiratory complications such as pneumonia, and difficulties in
breathing (Manisalidis, 2020). The long-term consequences of air pollution take time to recover,
and in some cases, air pollution causes permanent health conditions. The long-term outcomes
related to air pollution include atrocious asthma, pulmonic regurgitation, a condition that causes
the malfunction of the pulmonary valve, and cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart
disease, stroke, peripheral arterial condition, and aortic disease. Additionally, air pollution has
been known to cause cardiovascular mortality. Cardiovascular mortality is any death linked
directly to cardiovascular insufficiency (Manisalidis, 2020).
