QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN 2
To some extent, the lack of random subject assignment does indeed undermine
experimental data in quasi-experimental design. The lack of random participant assignment
decreases the ability of the researchers to deduce a causal relationship between the intervention
and outcome. The lack of randomization also decreases the study’s internal validity when
compared to other experiments. Since the subjects are not randomly assigned, the researchers
cannot certainly conclude the confounding variable has been eradicated (Singh, 2021). The
quasi-experimental design also has a wider scope for human error and leaves a larger gap for the
personal bias of the researcher to interfere with the experiment. Thus, the presence of systematic
differences between participants in quasi-experimental design makes it hard to deduct that the
results are purely associated to the independent variable.
Researchers are conducting a study to determine the impact of junk consumption on
obese of participants. At the beginning of an experiment, one group of participants is allocated to
the treatment group whereby they only feed on junk food while the remaining half of the subjects
are assigned to the control group where they maintain their standard diet and do not have to alter
their ongoing diet for the study. The researchers plan to write down notes about the health and
discomfort of the participants in treatment group on a daily basis. However, for some personal
reasons, some participants in the treatment group are unwilling to completely alter their diet to
junk food. This development in research prevents the researchers from continuing with the true
experiment. When having a conversation with the subjects, the researchers discover that some
subjects are willing to alter their diet to junk food while the others are adamant to to maintain
their normal diet. At this point the researchers can use the participants’ preferences to group
them into control and treatment groups and examine how daily consumption of junk food
impacts the obese of the treatment group. Although the subjects in this study where not randomly
