CITY AND COUNTRY SPACE

I have lived in a major urban area for most of my life, but I could not wait to get out to a
suburban area. But, I have friends that love to be in the city and can not imagine living in any
other type of environment. The city provides experiences that are unique from the experiences
one can have in the suburbs or in a rural environment. One can read about some of those
different experiences in the Edwidge Danticat’s “Westbury Court” and Joyce Oates’ “They All
Just Went Away.”
The first few sentences of Danticat’s describe an environment that is unmistakably part of
the city. Even if one did not know where Flatbush Ave is and how it looks, the descriptions of
the subway running the under the building and the “graffiti [that was] on most of the walls of
Westbury Court” are good indicator that one is reading about a story taking place in a city
environment. In contrast, the environment in Oates’ story is very different. The story begins
with the narrator describing how her “happiest hours were spent tramping desolate fields, woods
and creek banks.” The narrator continues to describe her rural surroundings by mentioning the
“back potato field” and “marshy woods that no one seemed to own.” It is obviously a very rural
area that the narrator is describing and although I have never lived in such an environment, I
have been able to experience, in a small way, some of the differences associated with a rural
area. These experiences come from the few trips I have taken with my family, but mostly
because of the travelling I did for work. On one business trip, I set out to visit a hospital in
western Pennsylvania. I was driving on a single lane dirt road that went on for what seemed like
miles and realized I was lost when the navigation system told me that I was at my destination
when I was really on a road that went through a huge cornfield. I was afraid to make a U-turn
because it would really be a K-turn that might put me into the ditch that ran alongside the road.
After the initial shock of realizing I was in the middle of nowhere, I started to notice and think
