Briefly describe the cookie production process.
The Baking Company uses a processing system known as batching to make the dough to produce
their makeits cookies. In the textbook, batch processing is used when a moderate value or goods
or services are desired, and it can produce making a variety of products and services (Stevenson,
2009). Once an order is received from their distributors, production is scheduled from these
orders. The very first step in this production is the issuing an order comprising of a list to thte
mixing person for that shift. The employee in charge of mixing the dough will determine which
ingredients are needed to produce the cookies that are ordered. This employee will then enter
those ingredients into the computer that determines what quantities of each ingredient is needed.
The computer will then send those results to the silos that contain each ingredient. The silos will
then automatically release the correct amount needed to the mixing machines. Once the mixing
occurs then the batter is cut into the cookie shape and deposited on a conveyor belt that takes it
to the oven for baking. After the cookies are baked, they set them out to cool. Once the cookies
are cooled then the workers box each cookie by hand. The cookies that don’t meet specifications
will be discarded. The last step in this process is putting the boxes into the machine that wraps,
seals, and labels boxes that are ready to go to distributors to be sold in convenience stores and
supermarkets.

The Baking Company has made some changes in their process to increase productivity. Once
change they made was discovering that the non-filled cookies could be cut on a diagonal (insead
of round), and if this was done each cookie required less space that allowed them to get more
