How Social Class Influenced Individual’s Work and Life Choices during the Pandemic
The Covid-19 pandemic, which broke out in 2019, has significantly impacted people. It
has led to the loss of human life and continues to cause unprecedented challenges to the world.
The social and economic disruption caused by the pandemic cannot be ignored. Millions of
people are on the verge of falling into extreme poverty, while the majority are malnourished. The
pandemic has come along with numerous changes in the way people work, associate with each
other, and also in what they eat. For instance, people have been used to wearing face masks and
maintaining social distancing as containment measures against the virus. Generally, the
pandemic has altered work, life, and living for many people. The pandemic has brought to the
attention a high rate of inequality resulting from social class. Social class has influenced people's
choices on matters of work continuation, the decision on quarantine, healthcare access, and
education.
Decision on work Continuation
Social class has had a significant influence on people’s life choices and work during the
pandemic. In the United States, people are characterized by different social categories depending
on their income level or occupational status. The highest class is the upper, followed by the
middle and the lower at the bottom. During the pandemic, each social category had to make
different decisions regarding remote working. When the pandemic broke out, people in the
corporate sector were encouraged to work from home to observe physical distancing. However,
the idea of working from home did not go well for everyone. It brought in the concept of power
and privilege whereby the more affluent or those in, the higher class had more privilege than
those in the lower class. This is because the more affluent could afford the necessary resources to
help them work from home, including computers and network connectivity.
