Before we dive into the study of jazz, tell me what you think jazz is.
Jazz is an ever-evolving and highly subjective genre of music. However, in general, jazz
can be described as a style of music that originated in the African-American communities of the
United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is characterized by a strong emphasis on
improvisation, syncopated rhythms, and a wide range of musical influences (2012). Jazz has been
hugely influential in subsequent genres of music, and continues to be enjoyed by listeners all over
the world.
Describe the personal feelings and attitudes you bring to this course.
I am excited to learn about jazz and its rich history. I love listening to jazz music, and I am
keen to learn more about the genre, its origins, and its influence on subsequent music. I am also
interested in the ways in which jazz can be used to express personal feelings and emotions. I
believe that this course will be a great opportunity to learn more about jazz, and to deepen my
understanding and appreciation of the genre.
Do you think jazz is currently a "popular" music, an "academic" music, or an "art" music?
(You may need to define these terms.)
In general, jazz can be seen as a type of "art" music, as it is highly creative and often
combines elements from a range of different genres. It is also generally seen as being more
complex and sophisticated than "popular" music, which is more focused on entertainment value.
Jazz has been taught and studied in universities and conservatories for many years, and is often
seen as an "academic" genre. However, it is also enjoyed by many people outside of the academic
world, and its popularity has grown in recent years.
Have you listened to jazz before this class?
