usually did?
The question assesses memory changes which may be indicators of dementia. Depression
is often present in patients with dementia and can increase progress in older adults (Ezzati
et al., 2019). Screening for dementia is necessary for psychiatric elderly patients.
3. Have you heard or seen things that other people claim they do not hear or see?
This question assesses auditory and visual hallucinations. These are the important
markers of psychosis which is more likely to be comorbid with depression in older adults
(Dubovsky et al., 2021). This question should be followed up with assessment of
delusional thinking to eliminate psychosis and hence effectively direct treatment.
Support System
In addition to the patient’s assessment, additional people to be included would be the
patient’s family, friends, and work colleagues. Family may include siblings and children who
live with or close to the patient. A questions directed to the support system would include any
changes in social interactions or loss of interest and pleasure observed with the patient. These are
criteria for depression diagnosis. Another question would be their observations regarding the
patient’s memory to evaluate any cognitive and memory changes due to the high risk in older
