I was raised in the first village away from the capital of the country I was born in
(Guyana). After some deliberations, the politicians decided to integrate my village with the
capital. I was about fourteen years old. Overnight, my status as a country boy changed to a city
boy or what the country folks would refer to as “town boy.” Regrettably, the attitude of the
people of my former village and to some extent, my-self, changed, as time evolved. We were no
longer considered country folks, we were now city people. The close connection that my parents
and the older generation held dearly with one another was lost to a new generation of children,
born after the merger of our village to the capital. This was equating to be living in Westbury
with the mind set of living in Millersport. Comparing or contrasting the neighbors and
neighborhood of these two communities that the writers – Danticat and Oates - identified with,
one must have some knowledge or experience of the way the people of these societies experience
their daily routine lives. My perception of the two neighborhoods – Westbury and Millersport - is
from the essays of the writers that centers on the familiarity I have with similar societies.
Red dusty brick roads winding around abandoned houses are images of Oates‘s
neighborhood. The distinct sound of rubber tires on gravel as a vehicle approaches makes a
pedestrian aware and cautious, and the dust that billows up after it passes causes eyes, nose and
mouth to be cover by a handkerchief or any other means available. A pebble, pulled by friction
from under an uneven tire like a magical force of reversed gravity, will trigger alarm as it
ricochet off a nearby tree trunk. Four prong barbed wire fencing, held together on upright
wooden post, reinforced by cross bars to the earth with the appearance right angled triangles,
runs like a gauntlet along the road; only severing at any crisscrossing street. There are few people
in sight and animals are scattered about here and there. There is a general impression of
farmlands.
