ONLINE WORK SETTING VS IN-PERSON WORK SETTING 2
Organizational Behavior in an Online Work Setting vs In-person Work Setting
Introduction
The coronavirus disease outbreak of 2019 gripped the world by surprise. As of December
8, 2020, there were over 67 million confirmed cases worldwide, with over 1.5 million deaths
(BBC News, 2021). Governments throughout the world have imposed quarantines to halt the
transmission of this contagious disease. During times of crisis, businesses have resorted to
working remotely to keep operations running smoothly and employees safe. Work from home or
working remotely is a type of alternative work arrangement in which office personnel perform
tasks that are normally performed in a central location. Employees use modern technologies to
team up remotely with the company's various stakeholders. Prior to the pandemic, Palumbo
(2020) reported that remote work was simply an added office perk. However, following the
COVID-19 pandemic, 66% of employees surveyed were forced to work remotely full-time.
Working from home has become a requisite for businesses to stay afloat. Not only does the idea
of working from home save organizations money, but it also enables employees to work
comfortably from home and carve out time for personal matters. The practice is gaining traction
in a growing number of organizations. The following paper seeks to compare in-person working
with working from home and telecommuting and their impact on organizational behavior. It also
discusses the considerations that organizations should make when developing an in-person
telecommuting/remote work program, the benefits and drawbacks of the practices, and the
practices' future.
