are on drugs may have a hard time getting off the drug. Drug abuse is something that
government is against and has stern laws to reduce the number of people that deals
with illegal drugs. People with drug habits can find the resources and get the necessary
help to deal with the addition they face. What drugs do the body and mind.
Drugs are chemicals that make changes to the make-up of the human body. Some
drugs are helpful and make the necessary changes like if someone needs medicine for
diabetes or chemotherapy for cancer. On the other hand some people take drugs to get
high as recreational use. Using drugs to ease the pain, to escape reality caused by
problems, or any other reason can develop addictions. Drugs react in the brain to
change the way the body feels. The brain is the master control center of the body and
releases signals throughout the body based on the signals received from chemical
messengers, or drugs. Chemical messengers are made in the body to do specific jobs in
the body. Drugs are not made in the body and can send the wrong signals to the brain.
This may become a problem to the body when the wrong messengers are received one
might end up seeing or hearing things that are not real or getting involved in activities
that they might not normally do. Along with affecting the way you see and hear drug
usage can make your heart beat faster and your body move slower. Drug usage can
affect the throat causing it to because dry and the eyes by causing the pupils to get
bigger. Drug usage can affect the way you breathe rather it be too fast or too slow.
People who have done drugs for a while develop tolerance to the drug. This means that
their body is used to the drug. This does not mean that the body is accepting the drug
but rather it means that the parts of the body that was fighting off the drugs are being

destroyed. When this happens in the body it takes more of the same drugs to get the
same feelings. This is a possible if someone misuse a drug and take too much of the
drug then their tolerance level for the drug may rise. Drug usage in America
Almost everybody knows someone who is affected by substance abuse it is very
common in the United States. Some shocking statistics about drug usage has been
released. There are over 3.5 million cocaine users, 1.5 million crack cocaine users, and
0.6 million heroin users in the United States (Abou-Gharbia, 2011). Marijuana is the
most widely used illicit substance in this country. Studies have showed that over half of
America’s teens have tried to illicit drug by the time they finish high school. Substance
abuse costs the United States more than $484 billion dollars a year. Each year
approximately 40 million debilitating illnesses or injuries occur among Americans as a
result of using tobacco, alcohol or other addictive drug. Many view drug abuse as a
major public health problem that impacts individuals and family. Doctors have linked
many of America’s top medical problems directly to substance abuse such as: cancer,
heart disease, HIV/AIDS. Drugs are used widespread throughout America rather they
are legal or illegal. Most Americans have medicine and have taken medicine for many
different reasons. Drugs can cause harm no matter if the drug is legal or illegal. There
are many people addicted to drugs that are legal. Death has occurred with the usage of
legal drug. Dosage is a factor that should always be in consideration with dealing with
prescribed medicines. Taking too much of a drug can be deadly. The top illegal drugs in
the United States of America are marijuana, heroin and cocaine but any drug is
dangerous if it is used incorrectly. Since the mid- 1980’s the United States has pursued
aggressive law enforcement strategies in effort to reduce the distribution of illegal drugs.
The crackdown on illegal drug in the United States of America landed lots of Americans
in prison. Unlike legal drugs, illegal drugs have no quality or price controls. Basically
anyone using the drug can never be sure of the strength and purity of the drug. Drugs
have different physical and psychological side-affects depending on the drug that is
being used. Drugs may cause enjoyable affects, however in the long-term may cause
harmful effects. People can get addictive to drugs both legal and illegal drugs are
addictive. Drugs are classified in three main types according to the affect they have on
the central nervous system: depressants, stimulants, and hallucinogens. Depressants
drugs don’t necessarily make a person feel depressed but these drugs do slow down the
functions of the central nervous system. In small quantities depressants can cause the
user to feel more relaxed and less inhibited. Larger quantities they may cause
unconsciousness, may cause vomiting, or in some cases death. Stimulants act on the
central nervous system to speed up the messages going to and from the brain.
