Culture is a set of key values, norms, and assumptions by members of a company which
are taught to new members as correct (Daft, R.L., 2014). Cultural gaps occur when the
company’s standards, rules, and expectations are not aligned with the external
environment or the company’s strategies. Leaders can detect cultural gaps by paying
attention to the work environment.
Leaders should observe what they see and hear, not what they think and feel. Changes
in what is accepted within the organization and what is not can be an indication of
cultural gaps. Production decreases, employee disagreements, and not being able to
handle a crisis, may also indicate a cultural gaps. Creating and influencing a responsive
culture is important as the right culture can drive high performance (Daft, R.L., 2014).
Leaders can shape cultural values through value-based leadership. When leaders are
aware of their own personal values and beliefs as well as the values they want the
organization to honor they can shape cultural values among employees. Leaders need
to display the correct values, attitudes, and behavior in order to motivate employees
(Daft). Leaders should emphasize what is important, communicating the goals of the
organization. By posting mission statements in places for employees to see, talking
about accomplishments, and repeating what is wanted within the workplace, culture can
be shaped. Leaders can reward employees for behavior that reflect what is important,
and discourage inappropriate behavior through warnings both verbally and written, or
firing the employee. However, the most important way for leaders to influence and
change cultural value within the organization is to model good behavioral. References
