AED 200 Tolerance in Schools Debate

We live in a nation full of diversity, different races and cultures come together to blend
our nation. Not all of America has become partial to our diverse nation so we must teach
the younger generation the importance of tolerance though is teaching tolerance in
schools the best way to teach students? Tolerance is an important aspect of human
culture. Without tolerance there would be racial violence, and the bias our nation has
begun to overcome would continue. We ask ourselves, how can we teach our children
about the importance of diversity and tolerance? Should education in diversity be the
responsibility of the educator or the parents?
With immigration and blended families our nation has become more diverse over the
years. Many different cultures come together to work and educate as a community. In
school we accommodate different cultures by learning and teaching about the different
cultures making up the population. We provide curriculum to help those students who
may not speak English as a first language, if it all. President George W. Bush passed
the “No Child Left Behind” agenda, insuring that all students receive a proper education
in spite of religious views, culture or orientation. Tolerance is not based solely on race
or culture, but can be taught so that students understand special needs as well. The
importance of tolerance is something the American culture has been learning for
decades. We need to teach our children and future generations the importance of
accepting diversity and the classroom, a diverse “melting-pot”, may be an ideal place to
teach diversity to young children. “Success in today’s world — and tomorrow’s —
depends on being able to understand, appreciate, and work with others.” (Lyness, PhD,
2014). Unfortunately some parents have not yet learned to be tolerant of the minority
groups. When a child lives in an intolerant or bias home, they will learn those behaviors
and the cycle will continue. Practicing tolerance at school will help break the cycle of
racism and allow students to be more successful in life.
Since the beginning of our country and the founding of the thirteen original colonies,
America was founded on immigration. Our ancestors came from Europe to be free and
create a new nation. As we began our nation was a diverse one, Europeans, Native
Americans and other cultures came together. America was not always as culturally
accepting of the other races, religions and we still have hurdles to overcome to create a
more accepting nation. American culture is supposed to be founded on freedom but the

slavery and abuse of minority cultures haunt our past. The civil war attempted to abolish
slavery and civil rights activists like Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King fought and
dreamt about the day when we would not be judge by the color of our skin, but our
character. In the recent years we have made huge strides towards equality and
tolerance. We have begun making marriage of homosexuals legal in many states, we
have given women the right to vote, abolished slavery and now no matter your culture,
gender, religion or orientation, we can all attend school together, work together and be
treated as equals in many cases. While the rights of American citizens have been
clearly laid out, there are still people in this country who disagree with the cultural
diversity of our nation. If we do not teach our children diversity and tolerance in school,
some children may never learn of its importance.
How does discrimination affect both students and adults? Discrimination has improved
over the past few decades and centuries, but it still exists. The most recent story of
discrimination is the story of Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teen who
was shot multiple times by police in Ferguson Missouri. While the Ferguson case is still
under investigation many say that racism and discrimination was the key
factor. American citizens fear law enforcement because discrimination is still
present. One racist person can create a large problem in our nation, including
violence. Violence and discrimination go hand in hand, so it is important that we teach
tolerance to avoid more acts of violence. Without the knowledge of tolerance and
diversity we risk our students being unsuccessful. If a biased teacher has a multicultural
classroom and does not teach the importance of tolerance, students can be singled out
and struggle to receive a quality education. When tolerance is not taught in the home or
at school bullying can occur. Bullying has become more violent and dangerous over the
years with students physically abusing their peers because of their
differences. Discrimination can affect the economy in many ways. Without the
teachings of tolerance, store owners may choose to segregate their businesses and the
economy will suffer. The job market could be affected without tolerance, this is why
discrimination and diversity laws have been passed. Sadly, tolerance is not at one
hundred percent in our country so laws have been passed to promote only ethical
behavior by businesses.
As previously discussed, teaching tolerance is important in our diverse world. To create
successful adults in a largely diverse nation we need to begin teaching tolerance early
on. Teaching tolerance to children will help create open-minded adults who understand
the importance of tolerance in a multi-cultural America. We need a community that will
not judge a person by their differences but rather by their compassion, character and
