Exercise 7-2 “in-basket” provided UoP students with a list of tasks; through group
discussions, UoP students should have established which tasks can or cannot be delegated.
Below are the results from group discussion #3:
1. Two applications for jobs (no positions open right now).
Delegate to the HR Department. The department can write a letter to the applicants to inform
them that no positions are available at this time; their resumes will be kept on file for future
reference.
2. A note to call Mary (salesclerk) about vacation schedule.
Act on. Talk to Mary in order to find out when she is planning to go on vacation; her vacation
should not be taken during the company’s special events that may require all personnel to be
present.
3. A notice that the mall will be changing hours for the upcoming holiday and requesting
notice of store plans.
Act on. The mall would like to be informed about the store’s plan. Planning activities should
always be handled personally by the supervisor.
4. A customer complaint regarding product quality.
Delegate. One of the two assistants can take care of the customers complaint. The supervisor
should instruct the assistant to bring the complaint to the next level of management only if the
assistant was unable to resolve it.
