Current Issues in Biology: Genetically Modified
Organisms
What are genetically modified organisms? Well it’s almost exactly what it sounds like it
is. They are plants or animals that go through a process where scientists alter their
genes with the DNA from other living organisms, bacteria, or viruses to “get desired traits
such as resistance to disease or tolerance from pesticides.” The debate over GM
organisms, most commonly foods, is whether it is a helpful or harmful to society. The
arguments for and against this are many but I want to focus in on a few for each side.
The arguments for GM organisms include the ability to increase desirable traits in the
foods and the fact that we can increase the production of food for third world countries.
(1) When looking into the arguments against GM organisms, it was brought up that these
foods are introduced to new allergens and toxins which in turn increase the health risks
of the consumer. (2)
GM organisms open a doorway to things that increase food production and distribution
and make the consumption of food more beneficial to the consumers all over the world.
One of the good things about GM foods is that the scientists who manipulate these
foods are able to increase the desirable traits in the foods, such as nutrients for the
human body. In today’s society where there is a big population of unhealthy people,
these foods offer a bit more health benefits than it normally would. Along with this
increased health, there will be a increase in food production. Increase in food production
means that there will be a decrease in world hunger. We can distribute more food to the
third world countries that go without food. There are many more benefits to GM
organisms but these are the two that were the most important to mention.
Although there are many appealing qualities about GM foods, the risks of these are even
more alarming. When scientists modify these organisms they sometimes turn on
something in the genetics of these organisms that can cause an overproduction of toxins
or allergens in them which are very unhealthy for consumers. This leads into the next
issue with GM organisms. They pose a big health risk on the consumers of the GM
products. Studies show how some GM foods that were given to rats and sheep cause
