Project Management Paper 2
Achieving Project Goals:Operation Elephants’ Ark”
Based on the necessity of the organization, projects may take on various forms. As
stated within the week two summary, “the project requirements form the foundation upon
which the balance of the project is built”. However, the needs of the stakeholders must be
established and a project plan including costs and time frames need to be provided by the
pProject Mmanagers. Further, project requirements should be defined in a crisp, clear, and
measurable way, to ensure a Project Managerproject manager has a viable chance of staying
within the boundaries of the project.
Within the week two simulation, the Non-Government Organization (NGO), Huduma
Foundation is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals in the national parks of
the country Kandivar. Ungabo National Park has given Huduma Foundation the project of re-
populating the Ungabo National Park with elephants from the over populated Zakinaka
National Park. The project, entitled, “Operation Elephants’ Ark” requires Huduma Foundation
to transport eight elephants across Africa to a safe habitat. Multinational companies and
wealthy individuals provide resources to the Huduma Foundation. Limitations identified within
the simulation and perspective change will be discussed herein.
The first approach to project planning is “work breakdown”; a hierarchy of individuals
specializing in differing fields at differing times is most effective. In addition, the Project
Managerproject manager must visualize the plan for bottlenecks during the project. Within the
simulation, Huduma Foundations goal is to transport eight elephants to the airport before
departure which proved to be a challenge. In order to achieve their goal, Huduma Foundation
needs to sedate the elephants, load them onto trucks, and place them onto airplanes while
reviving from sedation. However, this task became even more difficult when one of the
transport trucks broke down. Due to time constraints the Project Managerproject manager

evaluated the situation and objectively selected the paramount option to compress the project
cycle time and met the constraints of time and project safety.
Secondly, risks are unavoidable in a pProject no matter how well the project is planned,
and every project need to have alternatives when the unexpected happens. Moreover, it is
important to contain delays as much as possible by balancing the rest of the project resources,
like time, scope of the project and safety. However, the Project Managerproject manager should
not compromise the project scope or safety. In addition, the Project Managerproject manager
needs to ensure that proper tradeoffs are made between time, cost, and performance of the
project. For instance, in the simulation when the truck broke down, there was a possibility that
the remaining elephants would not make the flight. The Project Managerproject manager
needed to make alternate transportation plans that were successful in meeting the time
constraints of the project.
Since this week two simulation, my perception of Pproject Mmanagement has changed.
Prior to the simulation, my view was one of planning projects were a very simple job; however,
after completing the simulation it was realized that life does not go as planned. When the
unexpected happened with one of the transport trucks breaking down this could have caused
“Operation Elephants Ark” to fail, the reality of losing money is possible in a pProject was
realized. In addition, the author understands now that Project Managerproject managers must
be quick and careful thinkers taking every change into consideration because those decisions
can drastically change the outcome of the Project.
