How is conflict management critical to project management?
Usually the result of differing objectives, conflict is common in a project structure and can occur
at any level in the organization. “The project manager has often been described as a conflict
manager” (Kerzner, 2006, p. 288). Conflict management is critical to project management since
without managing conflict; the project may suffer delays, errors, extra costs, or even fail
altogether.
What might happen during a period of conflict within a team?
During a period of conflict within a team, the team and project may suffer. A team should work
as a well oiled machine; however, conflict may cause the machine to squeak or breakdown
altogether. During a period of conflict, the team is focused upon the conflict, rather than the
project at hand.
How does this differ from a conflict with a customer or a supplier?
Conflict with a customer or a supplier differs slightly from conflict within a team; however, any
conflict must be managed appropriately.
Conflicts with customers should be handled carefully, that is, to avoid loss of customers. If
customers are not satisfied, they may turn elsewhere. Organizations should follow strict conflict
resolution policies to assure customer conflicts are resolved to the best of their ability.
Conflicts with suppliers can also be touchy. Although the organization is now the customer,
compromise is still crucial. Making unreasonable demands can lead to escalated conflict. I have
witnessed situation where an organization made unreasonable demands of a supplier, as a result,
the supplier refused to provide service to the organization. A supplier refusing to provide services
can leave the organization out in the cold.

Controlling (9th ed.). New York, NY: Wiley.
