Abstract
Law-enforcement professionals have existed ever since there were laws to be enforced. These
enforcers whether they acted directly or indirectly were viewed with mixed responses by
populations they sought to protect. This is mainly due to the fact that, either as an individual, as a
group, or as a whole system in general, the way in which these professionals chose to enforce the
law be it benevolent or tyrannical shaped how the populace would view both the individual legal
enforcer and the legal system in its entirety.

PUBLIC OPINIONS 2
Is a sad fact that in today’s society, the legal system is viewed based upon two conditions.
The first of these conditions is a citizen’s economic standing. An abundance, moderate level, or
lack of wealth greatly influences the reactions garnered by individuals and their communities.
This economic profiling also extends to the legal system. Secondly, the media and their chosen
portrayal of the legal system whether based in fact or in fiction has an enormous impact on the
public opinion of whatever section of the legal system is being reported upon or portrayed. These
portrayals, both fictional and otherwise are often skewed to fit a preassigned narrative.
The wealthy often play by their own set of rules. In the case of law enforcement and the
legal system, since much of it is made up of public servants, and ideally the wealthy pay great
deal in the form of taxes, many of them believe that this entitles them to treat law-enforcement
professionals as their own personal servants. These servants exist to be complained to as well as
to vicariously display the authority of the wealthy individual. Conversely, when a wealthy
individual is confronted by a legal professional in the course of performing their duties with
regard to that individual, the wealthy can often purchase enough support or influence to
undermine the legal process or dismiss it out right, such as with the trial of Orethal James
Simpson (Linder, D.).
For the middle class, the entire legal system is something to be avoided. If confronted by
police or legal professionals, an individual from middle-class will often assume there is some
problem or obstacle to be overcome. As such, the presence of legal professionals in a middle-
class person’s life is often perceived to be a sign of trouble, and looked upon with negativity.
Legal professionals and the bureaucracy that accompanies them are a great source of
inconvenience and discomfort for the middle-class individual. Therefore, it is best, to the mind of
the average individual that they have is little contact with police or the courts as possible. This
