Relative effects of design, integration and information sharing on supply chain performance ¨ Bulent

Department of Business Administration, Gebze Institute of Technology, Gebze, Turkey Abstract Purpose
– The aim of this study is to empirically investigate the relative effects of supply chain integration, supply
chain information sharing and supply chain design on supply chain performance.
Design/methodology/approach – Data collected from 125 manufacturing ï¬チ rms in Turkey are used for
analyzing the relationships between the study variables. Regression analyses are used to ï¬チ nd the
relative impacts of predictor variables (design, integration and information sharing) on flexibility,
resource and output performances of a supply chain. Findings – According to the results of regression
analyses, the only signiï¬チ cant effects on resource and output performances belong to supply chain
design. Integration and information sharing are correlated with performance measures, but their relative
effect sizes are lower than supply chain design. Originality/value – The construct of supply chain design
developed in this study reveals a signiï¬チ cant impact on resource and output performances of a supply
chain. Therefore, this study can be viewed as an attempt to increase the level of awareness on supply
chain design issues. Keywords Distribution channels and markets, Design, Integration, Information

Introduction
Studies on supply chain performance can be classiï¬チ ed under two major areas. The ï¬チ rst category of
research is about how to measure supply chain performance (e.g., Beamon, 1999; Gunasekaran et al.,
2004; Lai et al., 2002, 2004). The second group of studies focus on several predictor factors that could
be used in explaining why some supply chains perform better than others (e.g., Akkermans et al., 2004;
Bhatnagar and Sohal, 2005; Ellinger et al., 1999; Fisher, 1997; Fleisch and Tellkamp, 2005; Fu and
Piplani, 2004; Ganeshan et al., 2001; Lee et al., 2000; Li and O’Brien, 2001; Panayides and So, 2005;
Perona and Miragliotta, 2004; Strader et al., 1999; Thoneman, 2002; Thonemann and Bradley, 2002).
Despite the abundance of research on the effects of integration and information sharing on supply chain
performance, there is little empirical work on the effects of design factors on supply chain performance
(e.g., Bhatnagar and Sohal, 2005). What is the relative effect of supply chain design as it is compared
with the other factors? For example, if a supply chain is not sufï¬ ciently designed to satisfy the The

needs of the customer, is it possible to achieve high performance only through sophisticated information
systems? The aim of this study is to empirically investigate the relative effect sizes of integration,
information sharing, and supply chain design on the supply chain performance. Data collected from 125
manufacturing ï¬チ rms in several industries in Turkey have been used for analyzing the relationships
between the study variables. In the following sections, ï¬ rst, supply chain performance and its
predictors are deï¬チ ned. In the methodology section, measure development and validation procedures
are described. Next, the results of the statistical analysis are reported. Finally, limitations and possible
future extensions are provided.
Supply chain performance
Supply chain performance and effective management of supply chains have been increasingly
recognized as critical factors in gaining competitive advantage for ï¬チ rms (Christopher, 1998; Simchi-
Levi et al., 2000). Earlier studies on supply chain modeling utilized several different performance
measures including cost, customer responsiveness, and activity time (e.g., Arntzen et al., 1995; Lee and
Billington, 1993; Pyke and Cohen, 1994). Most of these studies had mainly relied on the use of cost as a
primary measure of supply chain performance since it was easier to implement in quantitative models.
