Halliburton is a public company founded in 1919. It is one largest providers of products
and services to the oil and gas industry worldwide. Its revenue is estimated around 25
billion dollars. More than 70 000 people are employed in this industry which represents
140 nationalities in approximately 80 countries.
Halliburton was founded in Oklahoma by Erle Halliburton in 1919. It was first called the
« New Method Oil Well Cementing Company ». In 1920, by using cementing, Erle brought a
wild gas well under control. This method which allows « to exclude water from oil wells »
was assigned a patent from the U.S Parent Office. The company invented the revolutionary
cement jet mixer in order to eliminate hand mixing of cement and also the measuring line,
which is a tool used to guarantee cementing accuracy. The Texas oil boom allowed the
Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company to prosper in this area. Halliburton took the initial
steps toward becoming a worldwide company in 1926. In 1938, the first offshore well was
cemented by using a truck on a barge off the Louisiana coast. Halliburton appeared in
Europe in 1950 in Italy, it then expanded during the next 7 years to Germany, Argentina
and England. When the founder of Halliburton died in 1957, Its company purchased Welex,
which pioneered jet perforation. Halliburton has contributed a lot in foreign trade. In 1986,
Halliburton finally became the first American company to perform an oilfield service job on
the China mainland. Nowadays, Halliburton offers a large panel of services, products but
also services and integrated solutions for oil/gas exploration and development and
production.

worldwide. The major part of its business is the Energy Services Group which provides
technical products/services for petroleum and natural gas exploration and also production.
Kellog Brown & Root (a subsidiary of Halliburton) which is a major costruction company of
pipelines, chemical plans and oil fields, has been an important part of the compagny until
2007 when Halliburton sold the division.
Halliburton claims to use « clean energy » in carbon capture and storage but also
« geothermal energy ». The compagny also as an Oifield water management, in fact oil
wells produce more than 200 million barrels of water per day (3 barrels od water for 1
barrer of oil). Halliburton has improved its processes and technology to oilfield water
mangement by reducing and recycling produced water and also minomizing fresh water to
contribute to water conservation. Water management is the activity of developping and
distributing water ressources (drinking water, industrial water) by applicating water policies
and regulations. The company is really engaged in this type of management activities as it
is important to protect natural ecosystems. Water management is really important because
it's the most valuable ressource and a lot of people don't have a direct access to clean
drinking water or sanitation. moreover, by reducing the number of barrels of water
produced and/or finding alternatives uses for produced water can higly reduce the cost of
hydrocarbon develpment.
Halliburton has become the object of several controversies as the baghdad accident where
the company was accused to sell dirty water. Thousands of troops and civilians stationed at
a US military base in Iraq have been exposed to contaminated water. Kellogg Brown &
Root, a subsidiary of Halliburton, was supposed to provide bottled watef for drinking and
cooking but the water provided for showering,shaving.. was not treated. It resulted in
gastrointestinal problems comparable to food poisoning. However, the Halliburton
spokeswoman said after analyzes were made that there was no evidence that Kellogg
Brown & Root had provided dirty water. Halliburton company was found to have other
environmental issues. For exemple, in 2002 Toxics Reaease Inventory reports were
completed to measure the amount of chemicals emitted form Halliburton's Harris county
facility located in Texas : 245 TRI air in 2002. In june 2006, Another Halliburton's facility
created a toxic cloud that forect people to evacuate their homes. The company may also be
implicated in the oil spills in the Timor Sea off Australia in 2009 and in the gulf of mexico in
2010 ( an explosion occured which killed 11 worgers and the most important oil spill in US
history). Halliburton has agreed to plead guilty and pay 200 000 dollares for destroying
