Principles of Biology I Lab Week 2 Notes (Scientific Method)
1
Scientific Method
Required of a scientific result;
o It must be open to revision in the light of new data
o It has to be tested using the scientific method
A good scientific experiment is reproducible, meaning that anyone can conduct the same experiment in another
lab and expect the same results
What distinguishes scientific results from nonscience based claims:
o Scientific results have undergone systematic and critical testing
Four Phases
Hypothesis Form a hypothesis and design the experiment
o In order to be of scientific value it’s important that a hypotheses should be testable
o A good experience design is more experiment than a true hypotheses because a good experiment yields
information even when the hypotheses is disproved
o Suppose your hypothesis is “Braking distance grows linearly with speed”, the independent variable
would be speed.
o When you formulate your hypothesis it is important to be sure that it’s an idea that can be tested by
scientific experimentation
o Testing strategy is important in the design of an experiment because a good strategy will produce
accurate results
