YOUNG AT RISK

INTRODUCTION

The phrase “young at risk” includes the children and young people of the society who have been

neglected for their growth, development and safety by civilization and their parents and place

their lives at great risk to be affected by any kind of bad happenings. Normally young people

categorized in this term are orphans, abandoned children, street children, labor children, war

affected children, abused, prey of violence or calamities or drug addiction etc. Children around

the world have threats from various factors to their health and welfare. These threats include

environmental as well as global climatic changes and are associated with negative impact on

child health.

Environmental Factors

Let’s first discuss the environmental factors participating in threatening the world of infants and

young people. Water which is considered as the necessity of life is not being provided in its pure

form to the humanity. It contains various biological and chemical pollutants in it which is

constantly damaging the health of children. It is also the reason for onset of deadly childhood

illness in developing countries. Viruses, bacteria’s and other parasites are part of biological

toxins which through water source are residing in human bodies and causing various deadly

diseases. Lack of proper sanitary methods (especially in developing world like in Asian

countries) continuously adding contaminants (human or animal waste) in river and lakes.

Wastewater treatment is being done at very low aptitude without following standard methods and

waste water is directly drained of in water reservoirs for example in Latin America on 14 % of

wastewater is treated before drainage. Improper management of water gives rise to ecological

changes and degradation of water quality that support the more disease transmissions. Common

diseases through water transmission are diarrhoeal infection and Malaria and children are more

susceptible to these. Water-borne diseases are also transmitted through aquatic organisms like

schistosome, Guinea worm cause anaemia, malnutrition, stunting and disabling diseases. Tropic

lands such as urban American areas are the residence of mosquito vector carrying dengue virus

which is causes dengue hemorrhagic fever and is major killer of children.

Biological Factors

Production and release of toxic chemicals are not only polluting the environment but also are a

threat to human life and survival. These chemical contaminants are increasing day by day with

growing industrialization, urbanization and increased agriculture accounts. Industrial wastes

contains huge amounts of toxins which are directly poured into the water bodies without any

check which than become a part of drinking water disturbs the health of human body. The

chemical emission from vehicles and factories smoke, and chemicals in our food (insecticides)

are residing in the air and also the human body. Most of these such as polychlorinated biphenyls

(PCBs), DDT and bitoxins are not yet tested for their toxicity while others do not degrade and

lives in animals for decades.

Chemical Toxicants

According to the report of National Academy of Sciences published in 1993, it is stated that

medical scientists are worried about the fact that newborns and children are not properly

protected against the exposure to toxic chemicals that continue to e released in environment.
