Appendix B
LAN Operating Systems Scenarios
Read the three scenarios below, and then answer the questions that follow each scenario.
1. You are the network administrator for a new company that has 10 users and plans
to add five more users within a year. The files need to be accessed by all 10 users and
each user must have different security rights. What kind of network would you install
and how would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other?
Define each component.
I would use a client/server on a LAN. Each employee’s computer would have NIC
and that would connect to the server so that the employees would be able to store and
use files from it. This would allow the employees to share their information with each
other through the company server. By installing a Windows based operating system
on the server I would be able to assign each user rights and privileges based off of
what their needs or job required them to have.
2. You are the network administrator for a company that has a peer-to-peer network.
How would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define
all of the components of this type of network.
Peer to peer is when computers are networking while sharing equivalent
responsibility for processing data. Wired and wireless networks can be configured as
peer to peer. All of the computers of this network are linked together all acting as
their own private servers. Each computer would need a NIC and be connected to a
router or some type of hub through Ethernet cables. The router provides Internet
connection sharing between the computers. For each computer to let its information
be shared the employees need to work off of the same work group. The last thing you
would need is a good operating system to use.
3. You are the administrator of a client-server environment. What kind of network
would you install and how would the pieces and components of this network relate to
each other? Define each component of a typical client-server environment.
Because I’m a fan of Microsoft I would use Windows NT. The pieces of a client-
server environment would include a computer at one end and a server at the other.
My computer would be requesting information from the server. In order for this to

happen my computers NIC must be enabled to communicate with the server and then
the server will share the resources with the computer through the network.
