Physical layer This is the first and lowest
layer in the seven-layer OSI
model.
This is when the data is sent
on the network media by the
NIC.
Data link layer
This is layer two of the OSI
model and resides above the
Physical Layer and below
the Network Layer.
The Data link layer is
responsible for
communications between
adjacent network nodes.
Network layer
The Network Layer is layer
three of the OSI model and
resides above the Data Link
Layer and below the
Transport Layer.
The Network Layer is
responsible for establishing
paths for data transfer
through the network.
Transport layer
The Transport Layer is layer
four of the OSI model and
resides above the Network
Layer and below the
Session Layer.
The Transport Layer
delivers messages between
networked hosts and is
responsible for
fragmentation and
reassembly.
Session layer
This is the fifth layer of the
OSI model and is above the
Transport Layer and below
the Presentation Layer.
This layer is responsible for
establishing process-to-
process communications
between networked hosts.
Presentation layer
This is layer six of the OSI
model and is above the
Session Layer and below
the Application Layer.
This layer is responsible for
defining the syntax which
two network hosts use to
communicate.
Application layer
Layer seven of the OSI
model and is above the
Presentation Layer.
This layer provides end-
user services, such as
file transfers, electronic
messaging, e-mail, and
virtual terminal access.
Signaling This is a method of using
electrical, light energy, or
