Professor Janet
Persuasive Speech: Should College Athletes Get Paid To Play?
EXCITE:
Picture this. You’re walking in an arena and there’s tens and thousands of people
crowded and your heart is pumping, beating so fast as if you’re playing the drums.
You’re the number one player in the team. The crowd loves you. The camera flashes at
your face as they scream your name and wanting to get your autograph. It’s March
Madness and the school you’re representing is generating billions of dollars. Everyone’s
counting on you to do your best, but then as you see your coach, you suddenly feel this
hatred. And you want to get paid, remembering the countless nights you spent just to
get ready for this game and the pressure to do all of the make-up work by the time you
get back from those missed classes. You suddenly feel this pain that the college is
basically taking advantage of you, by not paying you a single dime or a fair share of the
billions of profit they generate. Then, after playing that final game, you gather with a
group and start an argument against the college that what they are doing, is leading a
corrupt system.
LAUNCH:
One of the hottest debates in the sports world for the last several years is whether or not
college athletes should receive a cut of the revenue they produce for the school. College
athletes are men that are trying to get into the pros and therefore, are not paid because
they have not been scouted yet. Because these players attend small colleges and
universities, they should never be paid to play their sport.
RELATE:
There is a legitimate reason why we call this a ‘college sport’. It is a college sport because
these athletes that play in these games are studentsnot professionals. Just like any
field, you go to college to sharpen your skills and learn how to do your profession. Think
of the movie, The Internship starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn when they were
interning for the company, Google. College sports are no different from this. It’s like
saying that colleges should pay their college theatre major to act in the school play. In
reality, no one pays these students to set up the scenery, choreograph dances, and to
sing in a musical for three hours straight. The reason why no one pays these students is
because they are just learning in that field in order to get paid when they do get a job. In
college sports, you play to get into the National Leagues, not to earn a paycheck as a
student.
INFORM:
College athletics became a culture back in the late 1850’s when the game of bats and
balls (also known as baseball) were becoming strongly popular at Williams College. It
wasn’t until nearly a hundred years later, during the 1950’s that the NCAA decided to

give a full-ride scholarship to their playersand the ones that play the best in their
college or division will land a job to play for major teams in the National Leagues.
During these times, everyone appreciated the scholarship they had received because
they were getting just steps closer to their dreams. Getting a full-ride scholarship was a
dream come true and became an honor for many American families. Many fathers,
throughout the years, push their sons and daughters heavily in sports so they could get a
full-ride athletic scholarship for top universities such as Syracuse, Stanford, Alabama,
Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. However, as professional athletes in the National Leagues are
earning a ridiculous paycheck of more than $10-100 million dollars for a contract, and
finding that the college bowl games and the March Madness are cashing in at more than
billions of dollars a year, a new problem arises. College playersfor the past several
yearsare taking in action and what they want is a piece of that pie.
You see it on the news and even on Disney’s ESPN that college athletes are bashing their
colleges that they are not being treated fairly. Out of the 168 hours in a seven day week,
a college athlete spends at least 49 hours a week just on training for their next games,
goes to school for about 39 hours and at least ten hours to study a week, leaving the rest
of the 70 hours to go to sleep and socialize with their friends. Many of these athletes see
this as an unfair advantage because they aren’t getting paid for all the hard work and
sacrifices they put in, as they watch the college generate billions, while they earn a profit
of $0.
But what do you guys think? Should athletes get paid to play, so they can get the fair
share? The answer is no. College is college. You don't necessarily need to get paid to
play. Sure all ball players spend so much time training. Sure college athletes are
bringing the most revenue to their colleges during the March Madness or even those
Bowl games. However, it does not mean that they should get paid. College players do not
get paid for a reason and that is, they are not professional. If you throw a college player
against someone in the big leagues, that college player is basically going to get beat up
and run over by the big boys. Professionals, on the other hand, do have the right to get
paid because they legitimately have experience in playing for top colleges like Duke,
Kentucky, to even a small college like Davidsonwhere the Golden State Warriors,
Stephen Curry, came from. These athletes show that they qualify to get paid because of
their skills, championships, the accuracy their defense, offense, blocks and shots they
have earned from each game they played. “Athletic scholarships are their compensation
and a fair one at that. Essentially they receive a free education and in return they
represent the school in a certain sport” (McCauley).
What nowadays college athletes do not understand is that they are breaking a
traditiona culture in which all their ancestors have worked hard over the years for a
full-ride to represent their school at no cost. The money that universities generates for
those games and tournaments goes to paying for all their staffs, the electricity, and for
all those buildings and the events they host. They even pay for the other full-ride
scholarship students in music and theatre and to even get the latest technology to supply
in their classrooms. To add, some colleges that are not in the PAC 12 are losing money
because their bills are so high, and just the idea of paying college players will result in a
major cut for other classroom resources and departments. The players should realize
that they are already given the chance to get one step closer to their dreams, and that is
