Introduction
Walmart Store Incorporation and Target Corporation are two big giants in the consumer
retailer industry of USA. Walmart Store Incorporation is the market leader followed by and
Target Corporation in the industry. Walmart is the largest consumer retailer store in USA with
11527 stores and clubs (in worldwide) (Walmart, 2016). The company was founded in 1962 by
Sam Walton (Walmart, 2016). Target is the second largest consumer retailer store in USA with
1793 stores (in USA) (Target, 2016). The company was founded in 1902 by George Dayton
(Target, 2016). The aim of this paper is to conduct a strategic audit on Walmart Store
Incorporation, and Target Corporation in making comparison in between these two companies,
and to explore the main business competitive strategies of these.
Comparison of Walmart and Target
Both-Walmart and Target have already created an active present in the USA market.
Walmart is the largest consumer retailer brand followed by Target in the USA market. Walmart
offers a variety of generic products in its stores. It has high level of cost advantages as
compared to that of its competitors. The company also created a strong presence in the

international market. On the other side, Target provides higher quality and innovative products
to the customers in its stores. It provides a unique shopping experience to the customers in its
stores.
Walmart has highly criticized for labor law suits and higher employee turnover. The company
was accused of paying very low wages to the employees. Even Walmart has focus on product
differentiation strategy, it has failed to achieve high level product differentiation. On the other
hand, Target has failed to create as much as store like as Walmart. As compared to that of the
Walmart, the number of stores of the Target is very few. Target has yet no stores in Hawaii,
Vermont, Alaska. Target has also limited presence in the international market.
Walmart has scope to expand business through more introduction of own label products. Also,
there is huge scope to the company to expand business on online. There is scope to promote
the brand of the company and easily reach to the customers through ‘Social Media Marketing’
the appeal of which is very high due to rapid increase of internet & social media sites usage.
Target Corporation has option to extend the business in the international market. In the USA
market it can expand business by increasing the number of stores in new locations.
The business of both-Walmart and Target are threatened by highly competitive market
environment. But the business risk exposure of Walmart is less than that of the Target due to
the fact that Target has high dependences on USA economy, whereas Walmart has created a
world wide exposure. But as compared to Target, Walmart is facing more currency risk
exposure.
